The school district emphasizes the value of regular attendance in enabling students to benefit from the school's education programs. Michigan law places responsibility on each student to attend school on a daily basis, and on each parent or guardian to send their child to school on a daily basis.

Any of these following options will help excuse your student upon their arrival:

1. Call the attendance line and report your student's tardy.
2. Send your child in with a signed note saying why they are tardy.
3. Send your child in with a note from a Doctor's / Orthodontist office confirming their appointment.
4. Use the parent reported absence option within MiStar Parent Connection.

If your child will be absent, please call our attendance line at: (734) 416-2880, press #2.

Be prepared to give the following information:

• Student Name
• Student ID NUMBER
• Grade
• Date of Absence
• Reason for Absence including illness symptoms such as cough, fever, fatigue, nausea, etc.
• A daytime phone number to verify the call

Please call the attendance line to report all absences and late arrivals. Unless we receive notification of your child's absence, your child will be marked unexcused.

You can report your student's absence using the MiStar Parent Connection

P-CCS has added the option for parents to report student absence through the MiStar Parent Connection. Once you are logged into your account, a link to “Report Absence” will be available at the top of the screen.

The Report Absence link will open a screen for parents to complete. The parent checks the name of the student for whom any absence is being submitted. If the parent has multiple students, they will all be listed on this page and the parent will be able to select the student for whom the absence is being submitted. The parent also enters the applicable dates.

If the parent checks the “All Day” flag, attendance will be submitted for all periods on the dates provided. If the parent does not check the “All Day” flag, times must be entered and attendance will be submitted for whichever periods meet during the time range. Please be aware that parents can submit absences two days prior and two days forward. Parents will need to contact the student’s school to report any extensive absences.

Automated Parent Notification System (APNS)

Parents will be informed of student's unexcused absences at approximately 9:15 a.m. each day. In cases of extended absences, school personnel may require documentation to substantiate the reason for the absence. To avoid unnecessary calls, it is important to notify Discovery Middle School about your child's absences prior to 8 a.m. on the day of the absence.

Parent Reported Absences

When it becomes necessary for a child to go home due to illness or injury, a parent or guardian will be called for student pick up in the main office. If you are unable to pick your student up, they can be released to the people listed on the child’s emergency card if we are notified in advance by the Primary Parent or Guardian listed in MiStar that the student can be released to the emergency contact. Identification for the person picking up a child will be required. We will not release a student to an Emergency Contact without speaking to a Primary Parent or Guardian first.

It is helpful if parents can have the student bring a note to the office for any pre-arranged appointments that will require their child to leave school during the regular school day. When a student is leaving school early, the person picking up the student must first report to the school to sign the student out. Please bring your ID. Parents should allow enough time to sign the student out, allow time to visit their locker and make their way to the office. The office will not call children down early to wait for parents to arrive. When returning to school in the middle of the school day, students should be signed back in at the office.

Students Released to Emergency Contacts

In order for a student to ride with another student both guardians must write a note containing the following information:

1. Both Students Names
2. What bus will be ridden.
3. Date
4. Guardian Signature

These noted must be brought to the main office before the end of lunch/recess for approval. Once approved, they student will give the noted to the bus driver.

For the 2025-26 School Year, Discovery Access Key for picture package purchases is: AA4610FALL25

School Pictures are scheduled for Thursday, September 5.  We are once again using School Pictures website as our vendor.

This year you will Pre-Order/Pre-Pay for your picture packages online. A pictures order form is available in the front office, however, picture orders must still be placed online.

To order your picture packets online - please go to School Pictures website. Select the Orange "Order Now" Button located in the top right hand corner for the homepage.

• When prompted, please enter our School Access Key is AA4610FALL25  (case sensitive) 
• Students will receive a student ID card when their picture is taken. Please encourage your student to keep this ID card in a safe place as they will need to utilize this ID card throughout the school year.

Yearbooks are to be purchased online ONLY - use a credit card, debit card or PayPal , go to Yearbook Forever and enter our school name.

Lost and Found articles are kept on the clothing rack and table located in the main entrance of the school. Please encourage your student to check for personal items during lunch and at passing time. Some articles, such as eyeglasses may be kept in the office.

Telephones in the offices are for school business. Due to the disruption caused, students will not be called from classes to answer telephone calls. Only emergency messages will be given to students. Students will not be allowed to use these phones unless they are conducting school business or in the case of an emergency.

• Forgotten books, lunches, lunch money, homework, Band Instruments, etc. do not constitute an emergency.
• If a student forgets their lunch, homework, musical instrument, or any other item they need for school and have called someone to bring it to school, it is their responsibility to check with the Main Office to see if it has arrived.

Please make sure your child’s name is clearly written on the item you are dropping off. This practice eliminates interrupting classes to locate students. We do place student names who have items waiting for them in the main office on the hallway monitors throughout the school. Students are encouraged to routinely check the hallway monitors to see if they have anything in the office to pick up. (Please remember that student use of electronic devices upon arrival at school could result in disciplinary actions.)

Forgotten Items, change of after school plans

Students have been instructed  to check the message monitors located throughout the school frequently during the day. We share school information and list students who have items to pick up in the main office on these monitors. The message monitors allow the school secretaries to relay important information to your student without interrupting classes. We cannot interrupt class unless there is an emergency situation.

If you need to get a message to your student please call the general office at 734-416-2880. 
Please note the following:

1. Forgotten Items

   • such as homework, lunch, athletic apparel, etc.
     Please drop off in on the bookshelf in the vestibule. We will put students names on the monitors and announce items that have not been retrieved during our 10:30 a.m. morning announcements, and again on the end of school announcements.

2. Emergency Messages

   • such as change in after school transportation or family emergency, we will contact your student directly as soon as possible to be sure they receive your message in a timely manner
   • Forgotten books, lunches, lunch money, homework, Band Instruments, etc. do not constitute an emergency.

All visitors must have a picture ID (Drivers License)

Visitors must sign into the kiosk in the vestibule to receive a visitor pass before they enter the hallways.

Parents are welcome to visit classes in session when an appointment is scheduled in advance, with the teacher. 

As a courtesy to both teachers and students, please do not interrupt a class without an appointment. 

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools has an opt-out policy for students and families who wish to not have their images used in school- and district-wide media, including the district website, district and school social media outlets, as well as external media outlets such as newspapers and online publications.

Cell Phone/Electronic Devices (Middle School)

Please refer to the cell phone policy in the Student Handbook. Highlights of this policy are:

CELL PHONES/ELECTRONIC DEVICES (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

• Cell phones and all mobile devices shall be turned off during the school day.
• Cell phones and all mobile devices shall be kept in a student’s locker – not in clothing pockets or in pencil cases unless indicated differently by the building administration.
• Cell phones and all mobile devices are not allowed to be used in locker rooms or restrooms at any time.
• Cell phones may be used in a classroom when directed by the teacher and for academic purposes only.

If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, they are to come up to the office.

Consequences and Family Communication:

Students using phones or electronic devices without authorization:

• First time will be asked to surrender his/her electronic devices to the teacher and can pick up the phone from the office at the end of the day.
• Second time will be asked to surrender his/her electronic devices to the teacher, and a guardian will be required to pick up the electronic device. The student will serve a lunch detention.
• Third time there will be a meeting with administration to create a personal electronics plan/contract and a guardian will be required to pick up the electronic device. Student will receive a 1 day out of school suspension. 
• Fourth+ will result in an out of school suspension. This discipline will be progressive. Student will be suspended for 2+ days.
   

A Student Vacation Form must be completed and submitted to the school office in advance. The form is available in the office or online.

Absences due to vacations are subject to school approval and may be considered unexcused if they do not meet district attendance policies.
